Happy Earth Day! As you know, I have always been passionate about thrifting and reusing, whether that includes refashioning, repurposing, or just getting that one last wear out of the item one more time, I hate seeing clothes go to waste.
Savers is celebrating Earth Month by launching its Rethink Reuse Campaign, you can use the hashtag #RethinkReuse on social media to support it. This campaign is focused on getting people to recognize the massive impact their clothing has on the environment and offering them the solution: To Rethink Reuse. It’s about highlighting a problem we might not even know to think about, and showing us that we can make a difference through reuse via shopping thrift or donating at their local Value Village store.
I included some interesting stats for your consideration:
- North Americans send 10.5 million tons of clothing to landfills every year. Ninety-five percent of these items can be reused or recycled.
- It takes over 700 gallons of water to make one new cotton T-shirt. More than you drink in five years. Now that’s a wardrobe malfunction.
- It takes over 1,800 gallons of water to make one new pair of jeans. That should scare the pants off you. Don’t stop wearing pants. Just start to Rethink Reuse.
- The average person creates over 80 pounds of textile waste per year. Landfills shouldn’t be laundry piles.
As you know with the move coming up, I have been frantically downsizing, donating and cleaning out my closet, but last week I had an hour of time to kill before the NYX event, so I stopped by the Bloomington Savers. The pictures are of the items I thrifted there, enjoy!
